APPROXIMATE CONSTANCY OF ADIABATIC INVARIANTS

General criteria to be satisfied by a slowly timedependent Hamiltonian in order to possess adiabatic invariants of m-th order are given. The degree of approximate constancy of such adiabatic invariants is evaluated. Methods derived are applied to the motion of a charged particle in a magnetic field, i.e., to the harmonic oscillator.
