HELIUM 3 SCINTILLATION NEUTRON DETECTOR

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4817498
A scintillation detector was developed for obtaining neutron energy spectra by distinguishing between ionization pulses produced by elastic scattering and by the (n,p) reaction. The detector consists of spaced-apart photomultiplier tubes and a plurality of spaced-apart scintillating means (phosphors) arranged between the tubes. The space between the phosphors contains He/sup 3/. The phosphors are arranged such that light generated by adjacent scintillating means enters different photomultiplier tubes, and the photomultiplier tubes are connected for coincidence counting. The He/sup 3/ gas in reactions with neutrons produces tritons and protons which are counted by the coincidence circuit. (M.C.G.)
