A Cerenkov counter is designed for velocity-analyzing a high-energy particle beam of large cross section. The counter has a relatively large input aperture and can detect charged particles moving parallel to, but off, the sxis of symmetry of the dielectric radiator. The radiator is a fluid at its critical point where it has a continuously variable refraction index. (D.L.C.)
