Results are presented as part of a continuing study of the metamorphic- plutonic history of the Blue Ridge and Piedmont Provinces. K-Ar isotopic age studies were made on micas from these rocks. It was concluded that the rocks of the Blue Ridge Province were subjected to repeated metamorphic activity. The initial metumorphism of the basement occurred at least 1100 million years ago. A widespread metamorphism may have affected the area about 850 million years ago. The next clearly defined event took place between 450 and 550 million years ago. At 350 million years ago metamorphism occurred all along the western border of the southern Appalachian Province. This appears to have occurred in a zone at least 100 miles in width. About 250 million years ago, a belt of metamorphism developed in Georgia that may prove continuous through the eastern Piedmont of S. C. and N. C. (M.C.G.)
