Reaction of Zirconium With Carbon Dioxide at 550–750 C

Journal Article · · Corrosion (Houston)

The kinetics of the oxidation of zirconium in C/sup 14/ labeled carbon dioxide were investigated at 550, 650, and 750 deg C with the vacuum microbalance. The amount of carbon deposited on the sample surface during oxidation in carbon dioxide was only about 2 percent of the total weight gain at each of the temperatures. In carbon dioxide, the rate of oxidation first decreased and then increased with time indicating breakaway. In runs in oxygen, the rate continuously decreased with time and breakaway did not occur within the period of the experiments. Maximum weight gain was 900 mu g/cm/sup 2/.
