STUDIES ON THE MECHANISM OF RADIATION POLYMERIZATION. I. MECHANISM OF THE GAMMA-RAY INDUCED POLYMERIZATION OF ISOBUTENE AND STYRENE

The gamma-ray induced polymerization and copolymerization of styrene and isobutene in ethylchloride were investigated at --78 and 0 deg and monomer concentration of 2.5 mole/l. The polymerization rate of styrene at --78 deg was 20.1 x 10/sup -6/ and of isobutene 14.1 x 10/sup -6/ mole/l. sec. The copolymerization rate at --78 deg for all inrtial mixture compositions was less than the individual polymerization rate. Isobutylene does not polymerize at 0 deg and there is a difffferent relation between the copolymerization rate and the initial mixture composition. The isobutylene-styrene copolymer was found to be enriched in the isobutylene component; r/sub 1/ (psobutylenel = 3.5; r/sub 2/ = 0.33. The molecular weight of the polystyrene was 70,000, of the polyisobutylene 8O,000 and of the copolymers, depending upon the composition, 27,000-55,000 (from light scattering data). The rate of polymerizatron oi polystyrene and isobutylene is proportional to the dose energy and the first degree of monomer concentratron. The data on the copolymer composrtion and the krnetrc relations afford convincrng evrdence thct gamma-ray rnduced low temperature polymerizatron of isobutene and styrene is brought about by carbonium chains.
