PHASE SEPARATION IN He$sup 3$-He$sup 4$ MIXTURES NEAR ABSOLUTE ZERO

Journal Article · · Physical Review (U.S.) Superseded in part by Phys. Rev. A, Phys. Rev. B: Solid State, Phys. Rev. C, and Phys. Rev. D
Phase separation in liquid mixtures of He/sup 3/ and He/sup 4/ at temperatures close to 0 deg K is discussed on the basis of isotopic impurity models. lt is predicted that for He/sup 3/-rich mixtures the phase separation line is asymptotic to the temperature axis as T yields 0, so that phase separation should occur in extremely dilute solutions of He/sup 4/ in He/sup 3/ at relatively high temperatures. For example, 0.003% of He/sup 4/ in liquid He/ sup 3/ should begin to separate at about 0.1 deg K. The phase separation curve for He/sup 4/-rich mixtures near 0 deg K is difficult to predict with the available data. One possibility is that dilute solutions of He/sup 3/ in He/sup 4/ may be stable at 0 deg K. (auth)
