PALLADIUM CATALYST FOR LIQUID PHASE COMBINATION OF HYDROGEN AND OXYGEN

A method is given for preparing an improved palladium catalyst for combining hydrogen or deuterium with oxygen in aqueous thorium oxide slurries with or without uranium oxide. The method comprises preparing a sol of thorium oxide calcined at 650 deg C and containing palladium nitrate at a concentration of at least 0.05 g/g of thorium oxide, contacting the sol with hydrogen until the sol is convented to a flocculated suspension, and adding the recovered solids to a slurry for catalytic action. The catalytic performance of such a catalyst is more than 4 times greater than that of palladium catalysts prepared by a previous dispersion method. (D.L.C.)
