ION-CHAMBER SYSTEMS

An improved miniature-ion-chamber system for measuring neutron fluxes in the Dresden reactor is described. The array of miniature ion chambers provides a detailed picture of the distribution of power within the reactor core, enabling the operator to avoid local hot spots and optimize over-all core performance. The system continuously monitors the neutron flux within the core of the reactor. The system is composed of l6 detector assemblies, each containing four axially displaced fission ehambers positioned in 16 modified fuel bundles dispersed radially in the core for optimum coverage. The sensitivity average of the system is 3.7 x 10-/sup -18/ amp per n/cm/sup 2//sec. Response begins at 1% of rated power and covers a range of 5 x 10/sup 11/ to 10/sup 14/ n/cm/sup 2//sec. Initially, over-all system accuracy is estimated at approximately 10% in thermal power as indicated by the control-room meter for a full-scale reading of 280,000 Btu/hr-ft/sup 2/. (N.W.R.)
