STATUS REPORT ON THE HANFORD DEVELOPED TESTER FOR THE COEXTRUDED FUEL ELEMENTS
Technical Report
·
OSTI ID:4816300
A description is given of the development and evaluation of the electronic instrumentation and mechanical scanning equipment for checking coextruded fuel elements for clad thickness, clad integrity, bond, and core integrity. Eddy currents are used in the cladding tests, and ultrasonic methods are used in the other testing procedures. Cladding thickness tests show an accuracy of plus or minus 2 mils for an average wall thickness of 0.020 in. Ultrasonic tests indieate that the equipment will provide adequate nondestructive quality control in the areas of its design, but additional instrumentation are required for complete quality assurances. The nondestructive testing program is being expanded to cover billets and welds. (B.O.G.)
