It was found that a solid solution or alloy of W and U consisting of 50 to 95% W and 5 to 50% U or U-rich alloy provides an ideal radiation shield for x rays, radioisotopes, etc. The alloys may be made in a variety of ways, but the preferred way comprises forming a sintered porous skeleton of W powder particles and infiltrating the skeleton with U to give a compact which has a density of -- 19 and may be readily machined. The infiltrant may also contain Al up to 10%. (D.L.C.)
