COMPARISON OF TENSILE PROPERTIES OF ZONE-REFINED NIOBIUM ROD AND SHEET

Journal Article · · J. Inst. Metals
OSTI ID:4815915
Experiments were carried out to examine the effect of specimen preparation and geometry on the tensile properties of zone-refined Nb. A 0.3-in. dia Nb bar was zonerefined in 8 passes, swaged, and recrystallized at 1200 deg C, and part of the bar was swaged to 0.1-in. dia rods, while the rest was rolled to 0.021-in. thick sheets, both reductions being equal in area. The rods and sheets were then vacuum annealed at 1125 deg C; the resulting structures had small surface grains with very coarse grains in the interior. Stress/elongation tests show different lower yield stresses for rod and sheet (8,600 and 11,700 lb/in./ sup 2/, respectively) but similar ultimate tensile stresses (20,900 and 20,800 lb/ in./sup 2//).
