AN EXPERIMENTAL SURVEY OF ($sup 19$F, $sup 18$F) NEUTRON TRANSFER REACTIONS

Journal Article · · Proc. Phys. Soc. (London)
Thick targets of B/sup 10/, N/sup 14/, O/sup 16/, F/sup 19/, Na/sup 23/, Al/s up 27/, V/sup 51/, Mn/sup 55/, and Co/sup 59/ were irradiated with F/sup 18/ ions with energies up to 43 Mev. The yield of F/sup 18/ from the neutron transfer reactions with these nuclides was measured by separating and counting fluorine from the irradiated targets. All the neutron transfer cross sections were found to increase from a lower limit of detection of about 0.2 mb to several mb at 43 Mev. The shapes of these excitation functions were compared with those expected from the theory for neutron transfer between the ground states of the interacting nuclei. Thin targets of Al/sup 27/ were irradiated with 42.3- and 34.2ar distrubution of F/sup 18/ was measured in each case over the range 0 to 178 deg in the laboratory system. A pronounced peak in the angular distributions was observed comresponding to neutron transfer from Rutherford orbits at the closest distance of approach. The value of the reduced radius R/ sub o/ at this distance for both energies was found to be 1.7 plus or minus 0.05 fermis. (auth)
