EUTECTIC BRAZING OF ZIRCALOY 2 TO TYPE 304 STAINLESS STEEL

Zircaloy 2 was joined to AISI 304 stainless steel by a technique called eutectic brazing. No braze filler metal is added to the joint during this process. Instead, a liquid phase is formed by a diffusion controlled eutectic reaction between the two base metals. The liquid eutectic forms at about 980 deg C, a temperature far below the melting temperature of either base metal. The resultant alloy formed on resolidification has fair strength but low ductility. It does possess good corrosion resistance in hot pressurized water. Several applications are described in which eutectic brazing is used to provide pressure seals and transition joints which have performed well in service. Some evaluation of the joints is presented as well as a general description of the mechanism of the process. (auth)
