THE BEHAVIOUR OF FISSION PRODUCTS IN PRESSURIZED-WATER SYSTEMS. A Review of Defect Tests on UO$sub 2$ Fuel Elements at Chalk River

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4814932

Presented at Tripartite Conference on the Transport of Materials in Pressurized-Water Nuclear Systems at Chalk River, February 28-March 1, 1961. The results of defect tests on UO/sub 2/ fuel elements run in loops in the NRX reactor were reviewed from the standpolnt of the release of fission products, the behavior of monitors, and release of UO/sub 2/. Release rates of Kr/sup 88/, Xe/ sup 138/, I/sup 135/, I/sup 133/, and I/sup 131/were compared for three defect tests in the X-2 loop on highly rated UO/sub 2/. The results were applied to NPD- 2 to calculate the contribution of fission-product gases from one defected element to the background activity from uranium contamination. (auth)
