Differential electrical migration in an ammoniacal solution of ammonia-- triacetic acid containing cyanide facilitates the separation and estimation of the alkali metal ions from other univalent ions (silver, thallium, and mercurous) and from all multivalent ions as well. Migration from this aqueous solution into and through a nitromethane solution provides for the separation of the alkali metal ions from one another as well as from the mixture. All the separated alkali metal ions may be located and estimated by flame photometry. Sodium, potassium, rubidium, and cesium may be detected and estimated by neutron activation followed by gamma-ray spectrometry. (auth)
