PROCESS FOR SEPARATION OF PROTACTINIUM, THORIUM AND URANIUM FROM NEUTRON- IRRADIATED THORIUM

The process comprises contacting an aqueous nitric acid solution of neutron-irradiated thorium, under net nitrate ion desufficient conditions, witb a solution of a trialkyl phosphnte in an inherent organic diluant, thereby extracting uranium and thorium into resulting organic phase while confining protactinium and fission products to the resulting aqueous phase, scrubbing any small amounts of protactinium and fission products from said organic phase with aqueous solution of an inorganic nitrate salt, separating the protactiniam- containing aqueous phase from uranium and thorium-containing organic phase, and thereafter separating thorium and uranium from the separated organic phase.
