A theoretical investigation was made into the timeenergy and space- energy behavior of a pulse of fast, fission energy neutrons introduced into non- multiplying, moderating mcdia. Interesting results were obtained for the thermal region where the neutron energy is less than one ev and the neutron-nucleus scattering process is essentially quantum mechanical. The spatial dependence of the thermal neutron energy spectrum and its departure frond the Maxwellian was investigated. A method for defining the region in a finite medium within which space and energy are accurately separable was established. The average energy as a function of position was also obtained. The behavior of a typical l/v scatterer, such as water, is illustrated. (P.C.H.)
