The lateral distribution of the Cerenkov radiation in extensive air showers

The lateral distribution of the Cherenkov radiation is calculated for showers of various zenith and azimuthal angles. No single structure function can be defined; for inclined showers, the intensities decrease outwards much more rapidly than for vertical events. For nonvertical showers, the distribution is also eccentric and asymmetrical. The intensity maximum always lies in the direction of the shower axis, but at some distance from the shower core. At a zenith angle of 20° , for instance, the maximum is displaced by about 20 m. The analysis of the relative contributions from various altitudes shows that those levels generally are the most effective at which the shower core first reaches the field of vision of the detector; where the core is not seen, the contributions tend to decrease uniformly with increasing altitude. Calculations are compared with data, and their implications for the technique of night-sky Cerenkov light experiments are discussed.
