TRANSIENT RESPONSE OF WATER TEMPERATURE THERMOCOUPLES
A method of estimating transient time constants for coolant water tidermocouples is presented. The method involves measuring the transient response to a step change in temperature produced by a rapid immersion in a liquid bath. Assuming that the response is linear, the resulting time constant for any given thermocouple is inversely proportional to the forced convection heat transfer coefficient between the bath fluid and the thermocouple bead. Thus, it is possible to produce a relationship between the measured time constant and those properties of the bath fluid which affect its heat transfer coefficient. This relationship can then be used to estimate the transient response of individual thermocouples under actual operating conditions provided that the heat transfer properties of the fluid in which the thermocouple is immersed can be estimated. Immersion test procedures and analytical techniques for applying this technique are given. Response time for several exposed junction (bared wire) thermocouple probes were obtained. (auth)
