THE STABILITY OF ACCUMULATION COEFFICIENTS FOR Sr$sup 90$, Y$sup 91$ AND Ce$sup 144$ IN SEA ALGAE (in Russian)
Samples of Cystoseira barbata and of a large brown seaweed from the Black Sea (Cystoseira) were grown in 2.5liter, glass aquariums containing 10/sup - 5/ curies/I of Sr/sup 90/ and Ce/sup 144/ (10/sup -6/ and 10/sup -9/ g/l respectively). The activity content of Sr/sup 90/ and Ce/sup 144/ was kept at the same level by adding 2.5 x 10/sup -5/ curies to each aquarium each day. Distribution coefficients were determined at different concentrations of activity in order to find out whether there was a variation in the distribution coefficient as a function of concentration. Equilibrium was attained in two days for Sr/sup 90/ and in six days for Ce/sup 144/. It was found that the distribution coefficients remained constant for Sr/sup 90/ Y/sup 91/ and Ce/sup 144/ within the limits of experimental error. The distribution coefficients were found to be 300 for Sr/sup 90/ and 2100 for Ce/sup 144/, and did not vary significantly whether the experiment was run with a single dose of tracer or with a multiple dose of tracer. Thus, the distribution coefficients were found to be stable in spite of a considerable variation in concentration of the isotopic carrier. (TTT)
