A study was made whose purposes were: to measure the absolute cross sections for various strange particle production reactions in xenon; to present corrected momentum and angular distributions of the strange particles as observed in the laboratory; and to observe the interactions of neutral K mesons that resulted in hyperon production. This invegtigation made use of a xenon bubble chamber as the charged particle detector. In addition to identifying events, other parameters necessary for a cross section determination were measured. The associated production of two strange particles was required for the identification of an event. This requirement eliminated possible background effects. At a negative pion kinetic energy of approximately 1.0 Bev, 4.6 plus or minus 0.5 x 10/sup 6/ centimeters of pion track were scanned. Thirty-nine uncorrected events were observed where a lambda hyperon and neutral K meson were produced and both observed to decay in the charged mode. The cross section for the production of lambda and neutral K mesons was 7 plus or minus 1 millibarns (per xenon nucleus). Results for other reactions were presented. At a negative pion kinetic energy of approximately 1,1 Bev, 5.5 plus or minus 0.5 x 10/sup 6/ centimeters of pion track were scanned. Seventy-two uncorrected events of the same lambda, neutral K reaction were found. The cross section for the production of lambda and neutral K mesons was 13 plus or minus 2 millibarns (per xenon nucleus) at this higher beam energy. Corrected momentum and angular distributions based on fifty-seven uncorrected events of the same reaction at the lower beam energy were given. The corrected distributions were given for ninety- three uncorrected events of the same reaction at the higher beam energy. Nine examples were found of a neutral K meson interacting in the bubble chamber to produce a lambda, which decayed in the charged mode. Associated with the production of the original K deg was a lambda. The total number and spatial distribution of these events were studied.
