Ilford G-5 emulsions were exposed to a 5.1-Bev proton beam. Of the interactions located, 26 could be classified as elastic collisions of beam protons with free hydrogen nuclei. After correction for scanning efficiency and background events, an elastic scattering cross section of 10.0 plus or minus 2.1 mb was obtained. The center-of-mass system angular distribution of elastically scattered protons was sharply peaked in the forward and backward direction and was in fair agreement with the prediction of a uniform optical model. Inelastic collisions were examined using multiple scattering, grain density, range, and angle measurements on secondary tracks. The results indicated a cross section of 15.8 plus or minus 2.8 mb for two-prong events, 10.6 plus or minus 2.2 mb for four-prong events, and 1.9 plus or minus 0.9 mb for sixprong events, giving a total inelastic cross section of 28.3 plus or minus 3.7 mb. The average pion multiplicity was found to be 2.7 plus or minus 0.3. Comparison of observed partial inelastic cross sections with the predictions of the Fermi statistical theory indicated that this theory underestimated the relative probability for states with high meson multiplicity. Considerable forward and backward peaking was observed in the center-of-mass system angular distributions for secondary protons, and, to a lesser extent, for secondary charged pions. Center-of-mass system momentum distributions for secondary charged pions peaked at lower momenta than predicted by the statistical theory, while those for protons peaked somewhat higher than predicted. Effects were discussed that would account for these discrepancies. ratios arises from the large energy dependence of the re
