SYNTHESIS AND FABRICATION OF REFRACTORY URANIUM COMPOUNDS. Second Quarterly Report for period June 1 through August 31, 1961

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4813916
Activities in a program to determine the effects of impurities such as O, C, N, U, and Fe on the irradiation behavior of UC are reported. Results are presented of work done in an effort to define optimum conditions for obtaining high-density sintered pellets of stoichiometric UC, and UC plus certain impurities. Factors affecting pellet density studied include the thermal history of the UC powder prepared by reacting UC/sub 2/ and C for various times and temperatures, pellet sintering time and temperature, added impurities, and the addition of Ni as sintering aid. A description of initial fabrication of 10% enriched irradiation samples is included. (J.R.D.)
