An apparatus for heating a gas to a very high temperature comprises a toroidal tube of low electrical conductivity material with an envelope of high conductivity material having a fissure along a large circle on the toroidal tube. In the toroidal tube, a circular gas discharge can be maintained. If a large electric current pulse is passed through the envelope in the direction of a small circle on the toroidal tube the gas is heated by rapid, thermodynamically irreversible compression. (NPO)
