An apparatus is designed for indicating the approach to prompt criticality of a neutronic reactor. The apparatus comprises means for oscillating an absorber in the reactor, a detector for measuring neutron flux in the reactor, two channels into which the output of the detector can be directed, one of which includes a narrow band filter with band pass frequency equal to that of the oscillator, and means for indicating the ratio of the signal produced by the channel which includes the filter to the signal produced by the other channel, which ratio constitutes an indication of the approach to prompt criticality.
