A nuclear reactor is described comprising a graphite moderator structure provided with a plurality of parallel channels for accommodating the fuel elements. In order to flatten the temperature distributnnon and increase the average temperature in the graphite structure, the said channels are each provided with a thermally insulating lining. Preferably this lining is constituted by tubular pieces made from a material having a low neutron absorption cross section and forms with the channel surface an annular interspace filled with stagnant gas, this interspace constituting the principal thermal insulation that almost completely suppresses heat transfer from the moderator system into the cooling gas circulating in the reactor channels.
