An electrical condenser system is designed for measuring the separation of opposed surfaces in close proximity, e.g., parallel plates forming the fissile structure of a reactor fuel element. The system comprises a metal base plate, a fixed condenser plate next to the base plate, and a movable condenser plate spring-loaded from the base plate.
