INELASTIC SCATTERING OF 14-MEV NEUTRONS ON LEAD, MERCURY, AND URANIUM (in German)

Journal Article · · Helvetica Physica Acta (Switzerland)
OSTI ID:4812207
A (d,t)-neutron source was pulsed to measure the flight time of scattered neutrons. A simple deflecting device for ions of small velocities is described, that allows the production of neutron bursts of 2 ns duration. The energy distribution in the region between 1 and 4 Mev of 14.5 Mevneutron scattered from natural Pb, Pb/sup 206/, and Hg was investigated. After corrections for (n,2n) processes according to Lang and LeCouteur the following nuclear temperatures resulted: Pb, 1.06 Mev; Pb/sup 206/, 0-98 Mev; and Hg, 0.8 Mev. The energy spectrum of neutrons emitted by irradiated natural U was also determined. This distribution deviates significantly from that of the other elements investigated because of the contribution of fission neutrons. (auth)
