CONTROL AND MAINTENANCE OF THE MCMASTER REACTOR COOLING SYSTEMS

Journal Article · · Research Reactor J.

The McMaster Nuclear Reactor is a 1 Mw pool-type research reactor in which the heat absorbed from the core by the water of the primary cooling circuit is transferred in an all aluminum heat exchanger to water in a secondary cooling system. By circulating the secondary coolant through a double flow cooling tower, the heat is dissipated to the atmosphere outside of the reactor building. The primary coolant for the MNR is dimeralized water. The purity and pH of the water is controlled by use of two ion exchange units. City water is the secondary coolant and it is treated according to a local water consultant. The maintenance program for the reactor system is described along with the water treatment methods.
