USE OF IONIZATION CHAMBERS FOR PARTICLE SELECTION ON THE BASIS OF THE MEASUREMENT OF THE MAGNITUDE E dE/dx (in Russian)
The simultaneous measurement of the energy and of the specific energy loss of particles makes it possible according to Bethe to differentiate between particles such as protons, deuterons and tritons which have identical charges but widely different masses. Ionlzation chambers are much more suitable for this type of measurement than scintillation counters because they may be provided wtth selector electrodes of the desired length for measuring the energy or the specific energy loss of the particles. In addition, a change of the gas pressure ln the chamber adapts it for measurements in the desired range. A modified version of the chamber described by N. I. Zaika et al. (Izvestia Akad. Nauk SSSR 23: l460 (1960)) was used. On the basis of the 13.6-Mev maximum energy of the cyclotron neutrons, 5 and 31-cm long electrodes were used, connecting them with pulse totalizer and amplifying devices. The output of the amplifier was separated in particle groups according to their mass by a multichannel analyzer or another discriminator. Satisfactory separation of the protons, deuterons and tritons from the Be/sup 9/ + d reaction was obtained with the device. (TTT)
