Total neutron cross section measurements were obtained at room temperature for polycrystalline KH/sub 2/PO/sub 4/' (NH/sub 4/)CrO/sub 4/, (NH/ sub 4)/sub 2/Cr/sub 2/O/sub 7/, NH/sub 4/CNS, and NH/sub 4CClO/sub 4/. The cross sections per molecule were corrected for neutron absorption and divided by the number of hydrogen atoms. The cross section slopes observ'ed for (NH/sub 4/ )CrO/sub 4/ 5.5 and 5.8 b/A-H, indicated a hindrance to rotation of the ammonium ion in these compounds. A significant comparison was made between cross section curves for (NH/sub 4/)/sub 2/rO/sub 4/ and (NH/sub 4/)/sub 2/Cr/sub 2/O/sub 7/. The slope of the dichromate curve was almost double that for the chromate, thus indicating a much greater freedom of rotation and weaker hydrogen bonding for the ammonium ion in this compound. lt was noted that the long wavelength cross section and slope for NH/sub 4/ClO/sub 4/ were significantly greater than those obtained for tation of the ammonium ion in NH/sub 4/ClO/sub 4/.
