RADIOLYSIS OF ANTIMONY(III) IN AQUEOUS SOLUTION

It was observed that Sb(III) in 0.8 N H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ and 0.8 N HCl is oxidized to Sb(V) by Co/sup 60/ gamma rays. ln aerated system, G(-Sb(III)) value in H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ medium was between 1.5 and 3.4 depending on Sb(lll) concentration. G(-Sb(lll)) value in HCl medium was 3.4 independent of Sb(Ill) concentration; after-effect was found only in this case. In nitrogen-saturated system, G(-Sb(Ill)) value was 0.43 in H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ and 0.36 in HCl media. A mechanism of induced oxidation of Sb(III) is suggested. (auth)
