The fabrication development is described for a tubular closed-end tantalum container approximates 9 in. long with an ID of approximates 0.375 in. and 0.020 in. to 0.030 in. wall. Impact extrusion techniques were used to form first a thick-walled cup which was subsequently ironed to the final shape. The material used for the initial investigation was prepared from tantalum powder; materials used later were highpurity electrun-bcam-melted tantalum and tantalum containing 0.l wt% tungsten. Several impact extrusion steps were required to form the thick-walled cup. Subsequent ironing was done in six stages. Aluminun- bronze dies and a beeswax lubricant were used to prevent seizing and galling between the tools and the tantalun. Loads of 30 to 40 tons were used for the impact extrusion process. Draw pressure requirements for the ironing operation ranged from 600 lb to 3600 lb. The Ta + 0.1 wt% W material conswstently required higher impact extrusion and draw pressures than the high-purity material. The development showed that heat-treating procedures had a considerable effect on the surface finish. In general, tantalum was found tu be quite compatible with this method of fabrication. (auth)
