CONSIDERATIONS ON THE RECORDING OF COSMIC RADIATION WITH A COUNTER TELESCOPE (in German)

Journal Article · · Acta Physica Austriaca (Austria)
OSTI ID:4810487
For recording cosmic radiation oscillations at the Hafelekar Observatory, two ionization chambers and a counter telescope were used. A study was made to determine the extent to which data from the three apparatus might be expected to agree and what factors influence accuracy. The relationship between the intensity of the cosmic radiation and the measurement value, the effect of the gamma background, the shower effect, and the directional sensitivity of the instruments were investigated. The principles used in the study of these four points are discussed, and the results show that at constant directional distribution of the cosmic radiation, all instruments have good linearity. With unknown changes in the gamma radiation and the directional distribution, an uncertainty occurs which can amount to several thousandths. The measurement curve is blurred by statistical errors. In fine structure studies, only those deviations whose amplitudes are larger than 5 to 7% of the absolute value should be considered. An accurate agreement between counter telescope and ionization chambers is only to be expected on quiet days. (J.S.R.)
