POLISHING AND ETCHING TECHNIQUES FOR SURFACES OF THERMALLY-SHOCKED ALUMINIUM OXIDE
Technical Report

OSTI ID:4810421
Techniques for polishing and etching high purity alumina are described. For sections through thermally shocked surfaces, it is necessary to glaze the surface to ensure the damage features are retained during the polishing and etching procedure. The use of Hyprocel paper laps helps to preserve the edges of the material during polishing, and gives a reduction in plucking in the rest of the surface. Four techniques for etching dense alumina are described; for convenience and control either sulfuric or phosphoric acid is recommeuded. (auth)
