COMBINED LAMINAR FLOW FORCED AND NATURAL CONVECTION IN VERTICAL ROUND TUBES

The compressibility of a fluid is described by the coefficient of cubic thermal expansion and the isothermal coefficient of bulk compressibility. The following considerations assume that the latter may be neglected in comparison with the former. Therefore the conclusions are valid only for liquids, with exceptions for gases under suitable conditions. When a fluid flows in a tube, under the action of pressure drop, the mean velocity is constant throughout the tube if the flow is stationary. If, however, the tube is heated or cooled, the buoyant forces cause increased or decreased velocity. Thus, the mean velocity is variable, even if the mass rate of flow is constant. Two basic cases are pointed out for ventical tubes of parallel flow (downward flow of cooled fluid and upward flow of heated fluid) and counterflow. In the first case the mean velocity decreases in the direction of flow; in the second case it increases. (N.W.R.)
