OPTICAL MEASUREMENTS ON NEON FLASHTUBES

Journal Article · · Nuovo Cimento (Italy) Divided into Nuovo Cimento A and Nuovo Cimento B

The light output from neon flash tubes traversed by ionizing particles was studied under a wide range of experimental conditions. It is shown that there is sufficient reproducibility in the intensity of the light output of the tubes in an array for accurate estimates to be made of the number of tubes flashing from the total amount of light emitted. An applicatdon is in the study of cosmic showers (extensive air showers); the need to photograph the array of flash tubes is removed and the recording of a single pulse from a photomultiplier system is substituted. When used in conjunction with after-flashing the photomultiplier method can be used to give an array of flash tubes some measure of internal selection of events. (auth)
