The rhenium and osmium contents and the isotopic compositions of osmium in a number of meteorites were measured. Os./Re ratios and Os/sup 187/Os/sup 186/ ratios vary sufficiently to make the Re/sup 187/Os/sup 187/ dating-method appllcable to meteorites. Also, the isotopic compositions of several samples of common terrestrial osmium were determined, giving variations in the Os/sup187/Os/ sup 186/ ratio which are larger than the common terrestrial strontium variations. The half life of Re/sup 187/ still is only tentatively known. Taking the latest value (4.3 x 10/sup 10/ years), it is shown that the results are in agreement with the assumption that stone meteorites, iron meteorites, and the crust of the earth were formed about 4 to 5 AE ago.
