A review is presented of the many theoretical foundations and the experimental approaches to measuring the magnetic dipole moment of short-lived excited states, along with the theoretical foundations that are employed in obtaining the correct value of mu from the measurements. Among the ment of angular correlation of two cascading gamma rays with and without the Larmor precession induced by an external magnetic field. When the resolving time of the coincidence circuit employed is much longer than the known decay time, three variations of the so-called integral method are employed: (1) the angular distribution is measured first without a magnetic field, next with a magnetic field H/sub 0/, and finally with the same magnetic field but of opposite polarity; (2) the anisotropy of the angular distribution is measured as a function of H; and (3) the coincidence rate, at an angle THETA between the two cascading particles, is measured with a fixed magnetic field of a given poIarity, then with the opposite polarity. Another general method measures the angular correIation or anisotropy as a function of time. The method of angular distribution in Coulomb excitation is also covered. By far the most accurate method reviewed is that employing the Mossbauer effect. Twenty-five measured values of the excited states of fourteen different nuclei are presented, along with corrections made in cases where the half Iife of the excited state was better known at the time this report was prepared.
