OXIDATION OF ZIRCONIUM AND ZIRCONIUM ALLOYS IN LIQUID SODIUM

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4809443

The oxidation of zirconium and several zirconium alloys was investigated in the temperature range of 400 to 635 deg C in a static liquid sodium system with oxygen concentration approximately 10 ppm. A transition from parabolic to linear rate of oxidation was observed in the temperature region 400 to 500 deg C for all of the zirconium alloys except Zircaloy2. Above 500 deg C the transition was not observed and a protective film continued to form. Using the parabolic rate equation to describe the kinetics of oxidation, activation energies of 52.9 plus or minus 0.5 kcal/mole for unalloyed Zr and 45.3 plus or minus 1.5 kcal/ mole for zirconium alloys were found.
