MILESTONE REPORT ON HYDROGEN PERMEATION OF OXIDIZED METALS AND ALLOYS, JOB 53292

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4809372

The mechanisms involved in hydrogen permeation in metals and alloys are discussed. Equations were derived for some special cases sufficient to show that these results are completely consistent with the notion that bulk diffusion of hydrogen through an oxide lattice is the rate controlling step. A system was constructed for use in making precise ndeasurcments of the permeation rate at pressures from 10 mm to one atmosphere. The apparatus also allowed controlled oxidation of either the upstream or downstream face of the permeation cell and a study of the kinetics of the oxidation. The effects of oxidation of the diffuser surface were shown by a decrease in the surface permeability constant and then the bulk constant. (M.C.G.)
