THE INVERSE PHOTOPRODUCTION REACTION $pi$$sup -$ + p $Yields$ $gamma$ + n

A measurement has been made of the inverse photoproduction reaction pi / sup -/ + p -- gamma + n with 72 Mev pions and at 90 deg c.m. The differential cross-section is (70 plus or minus 7) l0/sup -30/ cm/sup 2/ ster-i. Detailed balance and published measurements on the reaction gamma + p -- pi /sup +/ + n gave a pi /sup -// pi /sup +/ ratio of l.34 plus or minus 0.l5 at a proton energy of l82 Mev (c.m.) and at a c.m. angle of 90 deg . The technique used was coincidence detection of both particles with time-of-flight measurement of the neutron energy to separate the reaction from the much more probable charge exchange reaction pi /sup -/ + p -- pi /sup 0/ + n.
