FALLOUT FROM USSR 1961 NUCLEAR TESTS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4808590
The 1961 USSR nuclear tests produced 120 megatons of total energy yield, of which about 25 megatons was the result of fission. Since essentially all the detonations were air bursts, the fission products were scattered globally. Estimates are presented of the radiation exposure to residents of the U. S. from this fall-out material. Estimates indicate that the 70-year radiation doses to the bones of children born in 1962, resulting from all past nuclear tests, is about one-fiftieth of the Federal Radiation Council's guide for normal peacetime operations, and that about 40% of this amount was contributed by the 1961 USSR 90/ , Cs/sup 137/, I/sup 131/, and radioactivity in the air to exposure levels are discussed.
