POLAROGRAPHIC DETERMINATION OF SOME METAL IONS BY MEANS OF THEIR ETHYLENEDIAMINE TARTRATE COMPLEXES
The elements Fe, Ni, Cd, Cu, Zn, and Co form complexes in ethylenediamine tartrate solution. These complexes are reduced at the dropping mercury electrode with well defined waves, without maxima. Polarographic media were studied including a solution 0.5M in sodium ethylenediamine tartrate, and 0.1M in sodium pyrophosphate, a solution of 0.5M in ammontum ethylenediamine tartrate and 0.1M in ammonium chloride, and a solution of 0.5M in sodium ethylenediamine tartrate and 0.1M in sodium chloride. Cd and Cu showed reduction waves in all three media. Ferrous iron was reduced only in the NaEDT -Na/sub 4/P/ sub 2/O/sub 7/ and NaEDT NaCl solutions. Ni and Zn were not reduced in the solution contatning Na/sub 4/P/sub 2/O/sub 7/ but showed waves in the other two solutions. Co gave a reduction wave only tn the NH/sub 4/EDT -NH/sub 4/Cl solution. Procedures were developed for four of these metals, singly in solution, and for Ni, Cd, and Cu together in the same solution. It is suggested that ehtylenediamine tartrate complexes may be useful for the polarographic determination of a number of other metallic ions. (auth)
