A reactor fuel element for a power reactor using a fluid both as coolant and as working fluid is designed for efficient heat transfer and for containment of fission products. The fuel element comprises a central core of fissionable material surrounded by a cladding tube and a jacket provided with hollow protuberant spines. Spaces are provided between the core, the cladding tube, and the jacket which are filled with a fluid of high thermal conductlvlty, e.g., a metal. (D.L.C.)
