In view of the contradictory results of the spectra of gamma -rays originating from inelastic scattering of neutrons, studies were undertaken on the gamma -spectrum caused by the inelastic scattering of 2.95-Mev neutrons by I/ sup 127, La/sup 139/ and Bi/sup 209/. The neutron beam, obtained by the D(d,n)He/ sup 3/ reaction with a Zr--Mo target saturated with deuterium, was calibrated with a standard Ra--Be source. A NaI(Tl) scintillation spectrometer with circular geometry, coupled with a 63-channel amplitude analyzer was used for studying the spectra. The Bi/sup 209/ spectrum agreed with previously reported findings although the 1.29-Mev line reported by A. L. Androsenko et al. (Atomnaya Energiya 7 (3) 268 (l959)) was not observed; the peaks indicated Compton scattering. The spectrum of La/sup 139/ the presence of 0.64-, lished; the 1.24-Mev line is probably due to cascade transition from the l.43-Mev level to the ground state through the 0.l63-Mev level, while the 0.79-Mev line is probably due to the scattering of neutrons by Pb. The l/sup 127/ spectrum is quite complex: in addition to the previously reported lines, 3 gamma -transition lines with energies of 0.49, 2.13 and 2.66 Mev were noted. (TTT)
