A method for producing a burst of high energy particles by chopping a continuous beam of such particles is discussed. A system was devised which makes use of a turnon'' and a turn-off'' pulse of fast rise time, spaced an adjustable time interval apart, to produce eaeh beam pulse instead of using a sine wave. This system produces the desired square pulse shape, the successive pulses are exactly alike, and both pulse length and pulse repetition rate are easily variable over an extremely wide dynamic range. The circuit and principle of operation of this system are described. (auth)
