HEAVY WATER MODERATED POWER REACTORS. Progress Report, December 1961
Hydraulic tests with light water in the main D/sub 2/O system of the Heavy Water Components Test Reactor (HWCTR) continued satisfactorily. Final preparations were made for charging D/sub 2/O into the reactor system. Fabrication was completed on six pairs of Zircaloy-clad inner and outer thin- walled tubes of uranium metal for tests in the HWCTR. The first data obtained from examination of a swaged uranium oxide tube that was irradiated at Savannnah River indicated that process steps incorporated in the fabrication of the tube were effective in preventing localized hydriding of the Zircaloy sheath. Two compacted tubes of uranium oxide reached a burnup of 600 MWD/T in the Vallecitos Boiling Water Reactor without incident. Initial data were obtained at the Savannah River Laboratory on heat transfer burnout of tubes cooled by boiling water at 500 to 1000 psia. (auth)
