The behavior of 1-ascorbic acid as supporting electrolyte of the uranyl ion at 0.1 to 0.7 M concentration and the influence of pH on the diffusion current and half-wave potential of 0.1 M uranyl ion are studied. The cathodic waves from 0 to --2.5 v with mercury dropping electrode are studied in fresh 0.1 M aqueous solution in presence of Mg/sup 2+ and at 2.0 to 12 pH. A kinetic current with a half-wave potential of --0.85 v vs. Hg. d. e. is obtained at pH > 4. The same current had a second wave at --1.20 v in alkaline medium. At pH > 9.5 appears a third wave at-0.60 v. The pH variation does not influence these potentials. An inhibitor effect is produced by Mg/sup 2+/on the kinetic wave of dehydroascorbic acid, at a pH --6.0, because of the magnesium ascorbate formation. This salt at 2.4 x 10/sup -1/ M extinguishes the kinetic current, by which the interference is eliminated and the field of analytical application is enlarged. The catalytic waves of hydrogen have no valuable alteration in the presence of Mg/ sup 2/. At pH < 8.0 maxima have not been found. (auth)
